Thus faced by Byrhtnoth, of the rebel Saxon tribes

Nordic shields were shattered as the rebels strived to fight
In memory of their fathers, they struggled to last the night

But the Gods of War were summoned, and gave favour to their kind
The Norsemen trampled Byrhtnoth - in vain, tribute he declined
Saxon steel was splintered, against the bold axe of the north
The Raiders crushed their enemy and claimed the land henceforth

The routed shores of Maldon were now stained with Saxon blood
Their corpses lay along the river, trashed and mangled in the mud
Warriors lay there broken, praying to the man nailed on a tree
For they accepted a false idol who came from the southern sea
In vain they changed allegiance to this god from the east
Neither could he save them from the hordes of Nordic beasts
