SCENE FIVE: MAGNUS' LAIR AND - STREETS OF PARIS

Establishing Photograph: The turret of a crumbling castle on the outskirts of Paris.

(LESTAT wakes to find the tall figure in the room with him. Enraged, he leaps up and goes at him with his fists.)

[Lestat:]
Damn you! Who the hell are you? What do you want with me?

(The figure doesn't move. But LESTAT bounces off as if from a brick wall. He falls. The figure chuckles.)

[Magnus:]
Brave strong little Wolfkiller.

(The figure approaches, dropping his hood to reveal long black hair and a luminous white face.)

[Lestat:]
Oh God, help me, help me...

[Magnus:]
What God is that, Wolfkiller?

(LESTAT goes for him again. But he holds LESTAT by the shoulders and forces him to his knees. He leans over him. LESTAT gasps.)

[Lestat:]
Vampire.

(The vampire bites LESTAT. LESTAT experiences THE SWOON. He sees languid, hallucinatory images in a rapturous, peaceful drift toward the threshold of death.)

Yes... oh yes.

(After it's done, LESTAT wakes up on the floor. The VAMPIRE MAGNUS is dressed in garments from another age. LESTAT groans and shivers.)

I'm cold... and thirsty... so thirsty...

[Magnus:]
You are dying.

[Lestat:]
Let me out of here. Please.

(MAGNUS moves relentlessly toward LESTAT. He tries to get away, but he's weak and there's no escape. The VAMPIRE looms over him.)

[Magnus:]
Sunlight in the hair and the blue sky fixed forever in your eyes. My chosen one.

(The VAMPIRE touches his face.)

[Lestat:]
In God's name, get away!

(He makes the sign of the cross. MAGNUS swats his hands away.)

[Magnus:]
No more of that in my presence.

[Lestat:]
[weakly] I need water.

[Magnus:]
Yes. The water of all waters. Wine of all wines. Ask and you shall receive.

[Lestat:]
Please.

[Magnus:]
Ask for it, Wolfkiller, and you will live forever.

[Lestat:]
Water.

[Magnus:]
Blood. My blood will give you everlasting life. Ask for it.

[Lestat:]
[horrified] No! God help me! No!

[Magnus:]
Stubborn Wolfkiller. But I expected nothing less.

(The VAMPIRE slashes his own neck with his sharp fingernail and forces LESTAT'S mouth onto it.)

Drink.

(LESTAT is forced to drink from the VAMPIRE. He experiences THE SWOON again but as the predator now. He sees images of MAGNUS' life: his childhood, an alchemist's shop, dusk, a catacomb, a white VAMPIRE in chains, MAGNUS as a mortal alchemist drinking from his immortal victim. The VAMPIRE finally forces LESTAT away.)

Say my name.

[Lestat:]
Magnus.

[Magnus:]
Yes, child. I was old when I was made. Not young as you are now. But my blood is ancient and therefore, most powerful.

(LESTAT groans and doubles over.)

[Lestat:]
What is this pain?

[Magnus:]
Your body is dying. It will pass soon enough. Ah, what a child of darkness you will be! I have been searching for an heir. And I found him alone in the snow... doing battle with a pack of wolves. What a sight it was! You were magnificent! Beautiful and perfect with more fiber and courage than ten mortal men! I had finally found a mortal worthy of my immortal blood. Now listen carefully for I am about to leave you. And there are things you must know.

[Lestat:]
Where are you going?

(During the following MAGNUS removes his heavy cloak. He takes off his amulets, his belt, his jeweled sword, etc.)

[Magnus:]
The Thirst will come soon. It will lead you to your first victim. Be swift and show no mercy. As my heir, this house and all my treasure are yours. But there are laws that come with the Dark Gift. Never reveal our existence to mortals and never destroy another vampire. Conceal yourself by day or the sun's light will burn you to a cinder. Remember, nothing on earth can end your life except the sun or a blazing fire. Like this one.

(MAGNUS makes a fire erupt in the center of the room.)

Quickly, I need your vow. After I am gone, you will scatter my ashes.

[Lestat:]
You're not going into the fire!

[Magnus:]
Hear me! Scatter my ashes or I might return. And in what shape, I dare not think! Scatter them when the fire is out.

[Lestat:]
Don't leave me.

[Magnus:]
Your vow! Or I will throw you in the blaze and find another heir!

[Lestat:]
I'll scatter them! I swear it! But please, don't leave me alone in this. It's too soon. I don't know what it means!

[Magnus:]
I have set you on the Devil's Road, son. You must find the way yourself. Now live forever, beautiful Wolfkiller. I go to find hell.

(He goes into the fire. LESTAT is utterly horrified by what he sees. He falls to his knees in despair.)

[Lestat:]
How can this be
This devil leaves, and God abandons me
I'm left here looking at these flames
That too could set me free

The vessel that I used to be
Is tainted now and ripped apart
Bathed in madness by the fiend

(The fire has gone out. LESTAT picks up a handful of ashes and releases them out the window.)

Thrown from this ungodly swoon

Kept from my eventual tomb

(LESTAT leaves the tower. The scene transforms to the castle grounds. LESTAT comes across an old man, the stable master.)

It overpowers all right and wrong

(The stable master doesn't know he's there until LESTAT is on him. As LESTAT drinks from his first victim, he experiences THE SWOON again. We see images of the man's life: his poor upbringing, his family, beating his wife. When it's done, LESTAT lets the body slip to the ground. He looks down at the dead man.)

Evil. To feed on living beings. But his blood is white fire. And the night... luminous.

(LESTAT looks out across the landscape. We see images from his new vampiric vision. The colors are beautiful and luminescent. He can see all the way to Paris. He can see the lighted windows and the people in their homes.)

A thousand windows and a thousand mortal souls in their beds. Magnus, what is this you've given me?

(And he begins to hear the thoughts of the people drifting toward him like currents in the air. The sounds grow louder: cries, snippets of conversation, confessions, passions, musings, anger. LESTAT is jolted by the mingling of countless human voices. It's too much. A cacophony. He holds his head.)

So many voices... except the one I want to hear.
