SCENE ELEVEN: THE THEATRE - NICOLAS' DRESSING ROOM

Establishing Photograph: Renaud's House of Thespians without crowds.

(LESTAT and GABRIELLE help NICOLAS to his couch. He doesn't look up. LESTAT motions for GABRIELLE to leave. She hesitates.)

[Lestat:]
Please.

(GABRIELLE leaves reluctantly.)

Nicolas?

(NICOLAS lifts his head. He glares at LESTAT.)

[Nicolas:]
[bitter] You and your talk of goodness.

[Lestat:]
Listen to me... whatever you believe you witnessed tonight... is nothing more than a nightmare.

[Nicolas:]
Don't patronize me! I am not a child you have to protect! How can you deny everything that passed between us?

[Lestat:]
I deny nothing.

[Nicolas:]
Then how could you keep it from me?

[Lestat:]
You don't understand.

[Nicolas:]
I would have done anything for you!

[Lestat:]
And I for you.

(NICOLAS laughs scornfully.)

Don't mock me. You know nothing of what this is. When it was offered to me I said no. With my last breath... I said no.

[Nicolas:]
You gave it to your mother.

[Lestat:]
She was on the brink of death! You're young. You have your life before you.

[Nicolas:]
And you have eternity.

[Lestat:]
Don't you think I wanted to come to you? I longed to bring you with me into this! The idea of being with you forever...of moving through time together...is almost too much to resist.

(The Thirst overcomes LESTAT. He moves toward NICOLAS. Suddenly frightened, NICOLAS steps back which only fuels the hunger. LESTAT is on him. But he seems to snuggle with himself and then, he throws NICOLAS away from him violently.)

No. Take your life, leave with it. Run.

[Nicolas:]
My life? My life is empty and hopeless. You know nothing of what that is. You've never known despair, [painfully] I try to hold it back. But it's always there...crushing me. You could release me from this, Lestat. You have the power. Release me... please... if you ever loved me at all... release me.

(LESTAT cannot resist his entreaty. He pulls NICOLAS to him and bites his neck. THE SWOON: a bird soaring out of a cave above the shore...flat... endless... a desolate wasteland. LESTAT moans and thrusts him away.)

[Lestat:]
I understand now. Unbearable. I didn't know. I couldn't know. Drink.

(LESTAT slashes his own wrist and holds it up to NICOLAS' mouth. NICOLAS drinks from him until LESTAT pushes him away. NICOLAS falls back to the couch. He doesn't speak or respond.)

Nicolas, is something wrong? Can you hear me? Nicolas?

(He waves his hand in front of his face. No response. GABRIELLE enters. )

[Gabrielle:]
Disaster, my son?

[Lestat:]
No. He wanted it. He begged me for it. Nicolas?

(LESTAT slaps him. Still no response.)

How could this happen? What should I do? Gabrielle!

(She picks up NICOLAS' violin and hands it to LESTAT. He places it in on NICOLAS' shoulder. The violin seems to bring him back to life momentarily. He plays the same piece of music that he played at the inn. But now he plays the violin with supernatural skill. As he plays, the dressing room transforms into the stage.)
