- Песня: 28. Scene Eleven. the Basement beneath the Theatre / to Kill Your Kind
SCENE ELEVEN: THE BASEMENT BENEATH THE THEATRE
Establishing Photograph: The full moon through the grating
(The moon shines through the grating that opens to the sky above. LESTAT paces, weakly, still reeling from the sight of CLAUDIA and LOUIS.)
[Lestat:]
How long have they been here?
[Armand:]
Almost two years now. They told us they came from the New World. But they were never forthcoming about other vampires there. And though we asked many times, they would not speak of their maker.
[Lestat:]
Why would you keep this from me?
[Armand:]
I had to be certain.
[Lestat:]
Certain?
[Armand:]
That these were the two who brought you such harm. You did not tell me their names. You did not mention she was a child.
[Lestat:]
I am not proud of it. But our crimes against each other are not the reason I came to you.
[Armand:]
Any crime against a vampire must be reckoned with.
[Lestat:]
I did not come to you for vengeance, Armand.
(LESTAT weaves on his feet as if he's about to faint. ARMAND helps him to a chair.)
[Armand:]
Sit down.
(LESTAT sits down, gasping from the effort.)
[Lestat:]
I did not come for vengeance. I came for the other reason... that small thing.
[Armand:]
I know.
[Lestat:]
Are you going to help me?
[Armand:]
By and by.
(There are sounds from off and then the troupe comes into the basement from above. The actors enter chatting and laughing with LOUIS and CLAUDIA among them, still in costume. ARMAND steps back so that LESTAT sits alone in the center of the room. CLAUDIA sees him first. She lets out a gasp and stops dead in her tracks. LOUIS sees him then.)
[Louis:]
Lestat. Dear God... it's Lestat.
[Lestat:]
Louis.
(LESTAT attempts to rise, but ARMAND holds him down with a firm hand on his arm.)
[Louis:]
[breaking down] Oh, Lestat...
(LOUIS steps forward as if to go to him, but the other vampires lay heavy hands on his shoulders. He looks at them, curiously. He tries to pull away but they do not release him. A male and a female vampire lay gentle hands onto CLAUDIA.)
[Celeste:]
Come with us, Claudia.
(They steer CLAUDIA toward LESTAT.)
[Claudia:]
No. I want to leave now.
(She balks, looking back for LOUIS.)
Louis!
[Louis:]
Laurent? Gilles? Let me go! I want to speak to LESTAT!
(The vampires hold LOUIS firmly. LESTAT turns to ARMAND.)
[Lestat:]
Armand, what do you mean to do?
(ARMAND does not answer him. CLAUDIA struggles as they force her toward LESTAT.)
[Claudia:]
No, I don't want to!
(They force CLAUDIA face-to-face with LESTAT in the chair. She falls into stunned silence to see the extent of his wounds.)
[Lestat:]
Claudia.
(He reaches a trembling hand out toward her. She pulls back with horror and calls out.)
[Claudia:]
Louis!
[Armand:]
Is this the one, Lestat? Is she the one who contrived to kill you?
[Lestat:]
She rose against me. Yes.
[Armand:]
Did she kill you?
[Lestat:]
Yes. But I...
(CLAUDIA interrupts angrily.)
[Claudia:]
You killed me! You snatched me from mortal life like some grim monster in a nightmare fairy tale! Six more mortal years... seven... I might have had that shape!
(She points at ELENI who stands with the others. She speaks to all of them.)
Do not judge me until you have been forced to live forever as a child!
Song: To Kill Your Kind
[Armand:]
Be still I say for you excel
In virtues common in the infidel
A mongrel bitch who feels compelled
To twist the rules to suit herself
Do you look at me and see a fool?
Do we look like we bend for the likes of you?
What possesses you to cross that line?
When you know what it means to kill your kind
[Vampires:]
No greater crime than to kill your kind
No greater crime than to kill your kind
No greater crime than to kill your kind
(LESTAT appeals to the other vampires.)
[Lestat:]
There is a greater crime. My crime against her was far worse than death.
[Vampires:]
No greater crime than to kill your kind
No greater crime than to kill your kind
No greater crime than to kill your kind
[Lestat:]
Yes, she rose against me. But I do not blame her!
(ARMAND points an accusing finger at CLAUDIA.)
[Armand:]
This demon rides a carousel
She would swing high and low on the gates of hell
Pet the rats in the gutter pick the tick from the floor
Make a doll play the role of a common whore
So look at me and squirm inside
Did you think in this world there's a place to hide?
From the ancient ones to the next in line
It's always been a sin to kill your kind
[Vampires:]
No greater crime than to kill your kind
No greater crime than to kill your kind
No greater crime than to kill your kind
[Lestat:]
Have you not heard what I have said? Why do you care what she did to me?
[Vampires:]
No greater crime than to kill your kind
No greater crime than to kill your kind
No greater crime than to kill your kind
[Eleni:]
Do you not want justice, Lestat?
[Lestat:]
Justice was done. And it is settled between us. [to Claudia] It is settled.
[Armand:]
But she has broken the oldest laws. She rose against the coven master.
[Louis:]
What did we know of the vampire laws? Tell them, Lestat!
[Claudia:]
I knew nothing of your old laws!
[Armand:]
Excuse me if this is unexpected
Present company accepted
Ignorance of what we teach
Leaves help somewhere out of your reach
No Judas kiss is needed here
My friends the evidence is clear
There's no greater crime than to kill your kind
[Lestat:]
Eleni, have you forgotten who I am? Have you forgotten that I care nothing for laws?
[Eleni:]
We know how you love to break the rules, Lestat. But some laws must be upheld.
(She reaches up to touch his scarred face gently.)
We cannot be allowed to kill each other.
(ARMAND points at CLAUDIA dramatically.)
[Armand:]
She poisoned him and then, she slit his throat!
[Eleni:]
And even now she shows no remorse.
(ARMAND pushes CLAUDIA forward to look at LESTAT.)
[Armand:]
Look hard upon your dirty work
Strong blood brought him back from the ashes and the earth
Correct me, cherie but it seems your schemes
Come back to haunt your virgin dreams
We account not here for sex and age
Compassion is a weakness of the mortal race
Enough is enough, I'm done so take her
There's no greater crime than to kill your maker
(THE VAMPIRES lift CLAUDIA and carry her to the place where the moonlight from the grating makes an patch of light on the floor.)
[Louis:]
[desperately] It wasn't Claudia! I was the one!
[Armand:]
Your lies will not help her now.
[Louis:]
But I had a part in it! I set the blaze!
(ARMAND looks to LESTAT for confirmation. He shakes his head negatively.)
[Vampires:]
No greater crime than to kill your kind
No greater crime than to kill your kind
No greater grime than to kill your kind
(They tie her to a chair inside the patch of the moonlight.)
[Claudia:]
Louis!
[Louis:]
Lestat... make them stop this!
[Lestat:]
Listen to me! I do not want vengeance!
(ARMAND makes a signal to THE VAMPIRES to remove LOUIS from the room.)
[Claudia:]
LOUIS!
[Louis:]
Claudia! Help her, Lestat!
(He fights but the others are stronger. They take him out.)
Claudia!
[Vampires:]
No greater crime than to kill your kind
No greater crime than to kill your kind
No greater crime than to kill your kind
(LESTAT turns to plead with ARMAND.)
[Lestat:]
Armand! This is not justice!
(LESTAT attempts to go to CLAUDIA. But ARMAND and THE OTHER VAMPIRES force him out of the basement.)
[Vampires:]
No greater crime than to kill your kind
No greater crime than to kill your kind
No greater crime than to kill your kind
(LESTAT struggles but he is too weak to fight them.)
[Lestat:]
You will not do this in my name! I do not desire vengeance!
[Vampires:]
No greater crime than to kill your kind
No greater crime than to kill your kind
No greater crime than to kill your kind
(At the last moment before he is forced out by THE VAMPIRES, LESTAT looks back at CLAUDIA. She meets his eyes.)
[Claudia:]
Father.
(He is forced out. All alone, CLAUDIA looks upward as if she knows what is coming. Morning light slowly creeps across the floor toward her. She struggles against her bonds. And finally, she stops struggling as she is illuminated in bright daylight and burnt by the sun. She screams as the lights black out.)
Перевод песни:
