SCENE NINE: ARMAND'S TOWER - 1830

Establishing Photograph: A crumbling castle on the outskirts of Paris

(LESTAT stands at the entrance to ARMAND'S tower, the same tower that belonged to MAGNUS. ARMAND appears in the doorway. Dressed for the modern age, he wears a somber, sleekly tailored frock coat and cravat. His face lights up briefly with a glow of recognition.)

[Armand:]
Lestat.

(He stares at the horrific scars that cover LESTAT'S face and hands.)

What happened to you?

[Lestat:]
May I come in?

(He ushers LESTAT into the parlor. He motions to a comfortable chair in front of the fireplace and watches as LESTAT eases himself gingerly into it.)

The rumor is you met your end somewhere in Egypt or the Far East.

(ARMAND picks up a log to start a fire.)

[Lestat:]
No fire. Please.

(ARMAND replaces the log and sits down in a chair opposite him. LESTAT speaks hesitantly... stammering at times. His hands tremble when he gestures.)

Gabrielle? Has there been any news of her?

[Armand:]
Nothing. Since you left Paris.

[Lestat:]
You were right, Armand. As painful as it is for me to admit, you were right. They've left me.

(It takes a moment for ARMAND to comprehend who LESTAT is referring to.)

[Armand:]
The ones you made.

[Lestat:]
Ah, but you should have seen us! We were impeccable. A trio of deadly hunters. And we had thirty years... thirty elegant years... with the world all to ourselves.

[Armand:]
The world all to yourselves? I don't follow.

[Lestat:]
The New World. Did I not say that? I'm sorry. My mind is still clouded.

(Realization and dark suspicion crosses ARMAND'S face.)

[Armand:]
What happened, Lestat?

[Lestat:]
She rose against me. And she was brilliant. She planned it and laid her trap with perfect cunning. It was admirable really... something I might have done myself. But he... he knew it would take more than poison and a sharp blade to end my life.

[Armand:]
[appalled] They did this to you? The ones you made?

[Lestat:]
Not Louis. He never could have... he never would... the fire... was not his doing.

(ARMAND'S face registers grim satisfaction as if the name is confirmation of his suspicion.)

[Armand:]
How did you survive it?

[Lestat:]
I crawled to the window and fell out. I went down again... down into the cool blessed earth... my second death, I suppose. I do not know how long I remained there.

[Armand:]
Your wounds are so numerous... fatal. Even for one of us.

[Lestat:]
It was the ancient blood. The ancient blood sustained me.

[Armand:]
The blood of Magnus. Yes. Without it, you would not have survived.

(LESTAT looks up at ARMAND. He twists his hands nervously.)

[Lestat:]
[hesitantly] So you see... a small infusion of blood would hasten my healing. A small infusion would clear my mind. I don't want to stay in Paris. I don't want to trouble you or the coven. I am asking this small thing.

(Shock and realization crosses ARMAND'S face.)

[Armand:]
You are asking for my blood?

[Lestat:]
A small infusion. Otherwise, I am at the mercy of time to heal my wounds.

(ARMAND stands slowly so that he looms over LESTAT.)

[Armand:]
I am glad you came to me, Lestat. I am sure the others will want to see you.

[Lestat:]
The others? No. I could not let them... not this way.

[Armand:]
It is in vain that. But, of course I understand. You will stay here with me a few nights, until you are stronger.

[Lestat:]
And the other... little thing?

[Armand:]
I'm glad you came to me, Lestat.

[Lestat:]
Armand?

[Armand:]
By and by. But now I must go out. I am required at the theatre. Rest here, Lestat. I'll take care of your needs.

(He goes out, leaving him without an answer. The set transforms to the Theatre of the Vampires.)
