Establishing Photograph: The Townhouse

(CLAUDIA paces anxiously. She stops when she hears LESTAT'S step on the stair. She glances nervously into the parlor, straightens her dress. LESTAT enters, surprised to find her there alone. )

[Lestat:]
Where's Louis?

[Claudia:]
Still out.

[Lestat:]
Claudia...

[Claudia:]
Let me speak first. I know I have been hideous lately. I want to make peace. I want things to be as they were.

[Lestat:]
[relieved] This is all I want as well. Your words have been a torment to me. Yes, I made you and Louis to be my companions. These were selfish acts. I should have stopped to reflect, especially before I took you. I should have taken a deep breath. But I have always been impulsive.

[Claudia:]
And a liar.

(He winces from the jab.)

[Lestat:]
I have never spoken of what occurred in the past because I don't wish to recall it. You and Louis have made me forget. You and Louis are all I have ever wanted. And I have been content... all these years. But I hadn't realized that I depended upon your lack of pain for my contentment. I saw your pain tonight. Claudia. I didn't know how much you suffer.

(She struggles with her humiliation that LESTAT has seen her pain. And that humiliation makes her hate him all the more. She forces a smile.)

[Claudia:]
But I'm done with suffering. I want to be free of all that. I want to begin anew. And so... I have brought you a present.

[Lestat:]
A present?

[Claudia:]
A peace offering.

(She takes his hand and leads him down the hall and into the parlor. He stares. Two eighteen year-old twin girls lay together on the couch, unconscious as if passed out from too much wine.)

[Lestat:]
Twins?

[Claudia:]
From me to you.

[Lestat:]
Oh, Claudia. You've outdone yourself.

(She hears something that makes her turn back to the hall, alarmed.)

[Claudia:]
Here's Louis. And I so wanted this night to be just for us. I'll ask him to give us some time.

(LESTAT steps into the parlor as CLAUDIA rushes back down the hall to intercept LOUIS. As they talk, we see THE SWOON as LESTAT drinks from one of the girls.)

[Claudia:]
I told you to stay away!

[Louis:]
What are you planning?

(She glances over her shoulder. LOUIS moves toward the parlor.)

[Louis:]
Where's Lestat?

[Claudia:]
I mean to do this! Do not interfere!

[Louis:]
Lestat!

(LOUIS rushes into the parlor. LESTAT is on the floor. The dead girl lays beside him. LESTAT groans and shivers. His words slur.)

[Lestat:]
Something's wrong... too much absinthe... she's poisoned me...

(She rushes past LOUIS to stand over LESTAT.)

[Claudia:]
Absinthe and laudanum!

(She pulls a kitchen knife from beneath the pillows.)

You do not have remorse enough for what you've done to me!

(She grabs his hair and pulls his head back.)

[Louis:]
Claudia!

[Claudia:]
Only with your death will I begin anew!

[Louis:]
Claudia!

(LOUIS moves towards her.)

[Claudia:]
[a hiss at LOUIS] Stay back! [to Lestat] Only with your death will I end the suffering!

(CLAUDIA slits LESTAT'S throat and drops him to the floor.)

[Louis:]
[horrified] Dear God...!

(She stares at the blood that spills onto the carpet.)

[Claudia:]
You see? He is not so strong!

[Lestat:]
Louis...

(LESTAT can barely speak.)

[Louis:]
Dear God!

[Claudia:]
We're free of him!

(LESTAT crawls toward LOUIS who backs away in horror.)

[Lestat:]
Louis...

[Louis:]
I cannot bear this!

[Claudia:]
We're free!

[Louis:]
No... you've killed us. He cannot die!

(LOUIS picks up a lamp.)

He cannot die!

[Lestat:]
Louis...

[Louis:]
[to Claudia] Run!

(LOUIS throws the lamp onto the floor. The drapery ignites. He grabs CLAUDIA and they run out. LESTAT rolls away from the flames. As the townhouse burns, the set transforms to a sailing ship.)
